When designer ManChien stepped away from the spotlight years ago, she wasn’t stepping away from creation – she was recalibrating. Returning to the runway with her latest venture, Super Structure, in a high-profile collaboration with retail powerhouse Isetan, the designer brings an introspective, deeply evocative presence to Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week (KLFW).
Rooted in a background that bridges industrial and fashion design, Super Structure treats the human body as the ultimate canvas.
“The human physique is the ultimate Super Structure, especially when we look at the bodies of dancers and athletes,” ManChien reflects.
“Garments and costumes are essential tools for artists to express their art, and Super Structure is here to be a supportive element to those artists.”
The clarity of illusion

At the core of the brand’s KLFW showcase is I Do – a collection born from a deeply personal realization about societal expectations surrounding womanhood and marriage.
“The vision of marriage I held as a young woman was a beautiful wedding in a white gown,” the designer shares. “But as I matured, I realized that I had only ever wanted to wear the dress – I hadn’t given the true meaning of marriage a deeper thought. I Do is a clarity of illusion to myself: we don’t need to get married to wear a ‘wedding gown.’ It is about choosing what we love at every moment, rather than waiting for a particular ceremony in life to allow that moment to happen.”
A metamorphosis on the runway

The show unfolds like an existential narrative, taking the audience through self-exploration, dark transitions, and eventual self-actualization. To ground these themes, literary works – including Rumi’s Warrior of Love, William Blake’s Songs of Innocence and of Experience, and Carl Jung’s The Red Book – were woven into the presentation.
- Particles of Possibility: The opening look features skin-tone faux fur, spray-painted with glow-in-the-dark red fluorescent paint. Presented in complete darkness, it captures the raw, undiscovered state of an individual in shadow.
- The Blank Canvas: White silhouettes anchor the collection, representing purity, openness, and unwritten potential.
- Reframing Darkness: Black looks subvert traditional gloom. In one centerpiece look, an original poem titled Silent Heart is printed on a sweeping black veil, framing dark moments as essential spaces for rebirth.
- The Blooming Self: The final look closes the narrative loop with kinetic electrical butterflies with flapping wings, inspired by the Chinese proverb “If the flower blooms, the butterfly comes.”
“We feature electrical butterflies to show that when we put energy into grooming ourselves, we bloom,” explains ManChien. “What we seek is attracted to us—we don’t chase, we attract.”
Wearable philosophy

For those wanting to carry a piece of this narrative, the hero piece of the collection – a look titled Daughter of Star featuring the poetic black veil – has been translated into an everyday keepsake: a floating star necklace paired with a star-shaped cultured pearl.
“It is a piece I personally carry every day, to remind myself that all things happen for a good reason when we see from such a perspective and act with good faith.”
Creative synergy & looking ahead
Bringing a concept-heavy brand like Super Structure to market requires a robust ecosystem. ManChien credits the strategic partnership with Isetan and KLFW for bridging the gap between artistic vision and commercial viability.

“Collaborations link up points that originally stand strong on their own, but become quadrupled when brought together – where 1 + 1 becomes more than 2,” she notes.
As Super Structure establishes its footprint with its debut line, Second Skin for the Arthletic, the brand avoids rigid roadmaps, choosing instead to evolve organically alongside performance artists, dancers and creators.
“Know thyself,” offers ManChien as advice to the next generation of creatives. “Courage doesn’t come without fear. Use it as a drive to power you forward… and constantly make decisions that align with your envisioned outcome.”
