Allergy is a condition where the body’s immune system reacts abnormally to a substance (allergen) that normally does not cause a reaction in others.
Therefore, allergy tests are conducted to investigate the type of allergen to which an individual has a reaction.
Allergy Expert from Core Allergy Centre, Rahman Hamid, said that allergy tests can be taken by anyone, but it is highly recommended for anyone who consistently experiences allergy symptoms.
He explained that allergy tests are very useful in identifying the substances that cause adverse reactions in an individual’s body.
Core Allergy Centre uses the latest PROTIA Allergy-Q system technology, which can test and detect up to 107 allergens within 3 hours of laboratory diagnostics using a blood sample.
“Although some people have mild allergies, there are situations where an individual can experience life-threatening reactions. Therefore, knowing the exact substance you are allergic to is recommended to stay safe.
“You can then take steps to modify your diet or avoid situations where certain allergens are commonly found,” he added during a media interview at Core Allergy Centre, Mont Hope Clinic, Plaza Damas 3 Sri Hartamas recently.
Rebranding of the One-Stop Global Allergist Centre
Core Allergy Centre has been rebranded as a new one-stop allergy centre offering consultations, laboratory services, and products.
Starting in 2009 as the Global Allergist Centre located in Mont Kiara, the centre has diagnosed over 5,000 patients from Mont Kiara, Klang Valley, Peninsula Malaysia, Sabah, and Sarawak.

In 2023, Global Allergy Centre moved to new premises at Mont Hope Clinic and rebranded as Core Allergy Centre under new management, with the objective of providing allergy diagnostics and raising awareness about allergies in Malaysia.
With nearly 19 years of experience in medical laboratory and diagnostic work, and 15 years in allergy diagnostics, Rahman began his journey in this field under the guidance of Dr. Manmohan Yadav, a renowned allergy expert and founder of the Malaysian Allergy Centre, who was also the first to introduce allergy testing in Malaysia in 1973.

Rahman further explained that allergies involve high medical costs because patients frequently visit clinics to treat allergy symptoms if they do not know the exact cause.
For example, many people believe they are allergic to seafood like shrimp, but after testing, they find that other substances are actually causing the problem.

“That’s why I strongly encourage those who have such issues to undergo allergy blood tests to identify the cause of their allergies and prevent frequent occurrences.”
“Interestingly, with advanced technology like the one at Core Allergy Centre, the test not only detects 107 allergens but can be done just once in a lifetime at a cost of RM600,” he said.
As allergy symptoms can appear in various forms, it is crucial for parents not to misdiagnose their children and attempt self-treatment without the advice of a doctor.
If your child experiences any symptoms or suspects an allergy to a substance, take them to see a doctor or an allergy specialist.
In most cases, there are medications that can effectively manage allergy symptoms and provide relief.
Allergies are more common in children and teenagers
Allergic causes in children can stem from foods such as eggs, peanuts, various legumes, cow’s milk, soy, wheat, fish, and shellfish, in addition to bee or other insect stings.
According to Rahman, the severity of allergies can affect either specific parts of the body or the entire body.
However, he also reminded that each individual may have different allergic reactions.
Therefore, anaphylactic reactions are a medical emergency and, if not addressed immediately, can be life-threatening.
Common allergic reactions may include difficulty breathing, swelling of the airways causing breathing problems, hoarseness or difficulty speaking, nasal congestion or coughing, rapid heartbeat or pulse, itchy skin, numbness, and redness or swelling in parts of the skin and body.
Early Signs of Allergies:
Irritation (redness) and itching on the skin
Swelling in areas such as the eyelids, lips, and face
Change in voice (becoming hoarse)
Difficulty breathing
Sore throat
Fatigue
